Traveling with kids can be a challenge. It’s tough to find places that are adult friendly and kid friendly, at the same time. We take a lot of pride in bringing our kids on vacation with us and making sure that there is plenty to do for both kids and adults. Here in Texas, there are a large number of tourist destinations within a short drive. One of our favorites is Glen Rose, Texas. It may sound like a bump in the road, but it’s actually one of the best tourist attractions for kids in all of the expansive Dallas – Fort Worth metroplex.
Dinosaur Valley State Park
For the kids (and adults, too!) in your vacation party, they’ll love this step back into history books. They can see dinosaur tracks embedded in the river beds, view life size recreations of their favorite species of these long lost creatures and visit museum dedicated to them! By visiting the official State Park page for Dinosaur Valley, you can download a file for Google Earth that will lead you directly to these footprints, so you can see them up close and personal. For the adults, there are horse-led trails, plenty of fishing, scenic views and hiking trails galore. There are over 20 miles of hiking trails, all of which you can enjoy wildlife, and catch a glimpse of the times before us.
Fossil Rim Wildlife Center
Over 1700 acres of wildlife preserve makes up this wonderful attraction, not only for kids, but adults too! You can see exotic species of many animals, some of them endangered and brought to Fossil Rim to attempt increasing their population numbers. With self-guided and person-guided tours available, you can learn just about anything you’ve ever wanted to know about these animals and why it’s so important that we protect them. Species like the White Rhinoceros, the Blue Wildebeest and the Addra Gazelle are all there for you to see, close enough to touch (although we don’t recommend touching them). If you aren’t one for getting out of the car to explore these magnificent creatures, one of the mainstays of Fossil Rim is the 10 mile driving tour! I suggest making plans to come here way in advance, as during busy season, you may end up waiting in line.
Additional Attractions
Just a few miles from Glen Rose is the Paluxy River, where you can spend your days fishing, boating or just enjoying the views. The Squaw Valley golf course is a 36-hole, beautifully maintained course, just waiting for you to tee off.
Where should we stay?
You’re in luck, there are more than a handful of RV parks located within miles of these 2 parks. Hare are just a few to get you started on your search.
