As an RV owner it is important to maintain every aspect of your RV. Changing the anode rod at least twice a year helps prevent damaging sediment build up in your water heater.

Step 1: Remove Your Anode Rod

To begin, locate the water heater on your RV. The water heater is typically situated on the exterior, often accessible through an access panel. Once you’ve identified the water heater, follow these steps to remove the anode rod:

Turn off the propane or electric supply to the water heater. Ensure the water heater has cooled down before proceeding. Using a wrench or socket, carefully unscrew the anode rod. Remember that the anode rod may be hot, so exercise caution while handling it.

Step 2: Open the Valve and Let Drain Completely

Locate the drain valve on your water heater. It is typically a small, brass or plastic valve. Open the drain valve by turning it counterclockwise. Allow the water heater to drain fully. This process may take some time, so exercise patience. Once it is completely drained turn the valve clockwise until sealed completely.

Step 4: Put in a New Anode Rod

Now that the old anode rod has been removed, it’s time to install a new one. Here’s what you need to do. Take the new anode rod and apply plumber’s tape to the threads to ensure a secure seal. Insert the new anode rod into the water heater. Using a wrench or socket, tighten the anode rod securely. Be careful not to overtighten, as this may cause damage to the water heater.

Step 5: Fill the Water Heater Up Again

With the new anode rod in place, it’s time to refill the water heater. Close the access panel to the water heater. Ensure that all faucets in your RV are closed. Turn on the water supply to your RV, allowing the water heater to fill.

Regularly changing the anode rod in your RV’s water heater is a simple yet crucial task that helps protect your investment and ensure the longevity of your water heating system. By following the step-by-step process you can easily and effectively change the anode rod in your RV, safeguarding against corrosion and maintaining the efficiency of your water heater. Remember, proper maintenance is the key to enjoying a hassle-free and comfortable RVing experience.
